In an effort to accelerate the development of next-generation automobiles and robots, Toyota is turning to some of Japan’s top neuroscientists. According to a December 14 announcement, the automaker has teamed up with the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) in a 20-year project aimed at researching the human brain and developing neurotechnology-based auto safety systems, sophisticated robots, and machinery that users can operate with their minds.
You know, I’m really not sure that I want a car that can read my mind. I don’t know about you, but a lot of stuff passes through my head while I’m driving. I’m talking about some pretty crazy shit. Let’s say I start thinking about, oh, I don’t know, breasts–will the windshield wipers start sweeping back and forth? Well, I guess that much I could live with. But what if I start thinking about the Lacanian Objet Petit a? Or quantum entanglement? Or the permutation matrix of Bach’s The Art of the Fugue? What then? Tell me that, you mad scientists! What then?
