MAY we suggest some hot holiday reading?

The long Memorial Day weekend promises a break from school and work — and extra hours to relax in the sun or under a shady tree and catch up on the newest Vertical books.

This month’s offerings include the latest volumes in fun favorites like the Nichijou, My Neighbor Seki, and Cardfight!! Vanguard series, as well as the hardhitting, action-packed Ninja Slayer. In May, we’re also introducing The Seven Deadly Sins: Seven Scars They Left Behind, a light novel that’s sure to be a hit with the many fans of the popular manga and the anime streaming on Netflix.

New Releases

Just as surreal and amusing as earlier volumes, nichijou: my ordinary life (8) shares the latest out-of-the-ordinary exploits of Yuuko, Mio, the Professor, Ms. Nakamura, Mai, Sakamoto, and the rest of the bizarrely lovable crew. In volume 8, a u.f.o. causes Yuuko’s lunch to come out of her nose. Ms. Nakamura tries an adorable new ploy. The characters discover that hypnosis doesn’t work, until it works all too well. And Weboshi might actually be able to read minds. Just another school day in Tokisadame.

And speaking of school days, the giggles keep on coming in My Neighbor Seki 9, as Seki continues to live in his own wildly inventive world at the back of the classroom, while his seatmate Rumi struggles to figure out what he’s up to. This time, Seki transforms himself into an old lady selling cheap candy, an avant garde artist who uses a very unusual medium, and a marionette who mimics his own antics in miniature. How can Rumi possibly be expected to pay attention to the teacher when Seki’s antics are way too distracting??

Like the earlier volumes, Cardfight!! Vanguard 8 book brings you deep into the intense world of trading-card gaming, and the lives of the players as they navigate high-stakes competitions and high-school life. In this episode, Takuto Tatsunagi transforms into the powerful Conductor, who has the power to “tune” the linked destiny of Earth and Planet Cray. The appearance of the unusual Deletor cards wielded by Kouji Ibuki threatens to unbalance that destiny. Meanwhile, Asaka, having been turned into a PSY Qualia zombie, demands a cardfight with Ren. Be sure to get your copy of Cardfight!! Vanguard 8 right away — only the first printing will include a LIMITED EDITION PR CARD!

The eighth Ninja Slayer installment, Merry Christmas Neo Saitama, takes the story back to the beginning, to reveal the mysterious origins of the legendary Ninja Slayer — back to a Christmas Eve when all was calm, all was bright. . . . until it ended in blood and a thirst for vengeance. If you’re one of the legion of avid fans who have followed this futuristic sci-fi tale of ninja-on-ninja warfare, you’ll definitely want to find out how it all started.

In The Seven Deadly Sins: Seven Scars They Left Behind, author Shuka Matsuda imagines a prequel to the universe created by Nakaba Suzuki. These stories return to the defining moment, ten years before the beginning of The Seven Deadly Sins‘ arc, when an unspeakable act of treason changed the course of the Kingdom of Liones. Each story in the book is told from the perspective of one of the Holy Knights tasked with tracking down the traitors and bringing them to justice. These seven short works of fantasy fiction add new dimension to the manga and anime, and will satisfy fans’ craving for MORE in this “royal” franchise.

Spring into a New Season with Vertical

New Releases

There is an idiom that states, “march comes in like a lion…” For Vertical this year, that is definitely apt! This month we have some heavy hitters including the debut of one of our most anticipated series yet! So prepare to hear some noise this month cause we do not expect to go out like a lamb!

Debuting this month is Chihiro Ishizuka’s Flying Witch volume 1. The inspiration for 2016’s sleeper hit by JC Staff is a heart-warming thoughtful comedy set in an unusual location, which only adds to its charm.

Witch-in-training, Makoto Kowata, has relocated to Japan’s far north – Aomori! It’s a different world up there when compared to Yokohama and Tokyo, but that does not mean it does not have its own magic. Actually with Makoto there life is about to get a lot more fantastic for her relatives whom she is staying with. Days up there were rather sleepy and traditional before Makoto arrived, but now they are filled with mysterious people, flying broomsticks, and screaming mandrakes. Still, even with new spell casters around, life is only as magical as you make it and every chapter of Flying Witch makes every day feel enchanted.

In volume 3 of Tsutomu Nihei’s BLAME!, Kyrii and Cibo have reached the mega-structure! After searching through Nihei’s massive world, Kyrii is now close to revealing some of its secrets.

Once inside Toha Heavy the two become witness to a world that is quite different from what was outside. The landscape is less chaotic. The rules are more rigid and restricted. And the threats are significantly greater. Kyrii will have to deal with forces that control time, space, and other elements of physics while still on the search for human life and the Net Terminal Gene! But can he do so without his trusted gravitation beam emitter?

In Mysterious Girlfriend X 5, we are treated to one of the longest story lines in this series so far. Set in the backdrop of the annual Kazamidai High cultural fair, Tsubaki and Urabe are pulled into playing some of the most intimate scenes of their short relationship.
Tsubaki’s film club has decided to make a movie for their festival entry. But the theme and plot of this film is cutting very close to the bone for Tsubaki, as it reminds him of the relationship he has with Urabe. And what’s more, eventually Urabe is asked to participate as one of the supporting actors!

And finally, in Nichijou 7, we are treated a number of sudden surprises! Imagine the scene when friends discuss copying homework when one of them confesses her feelings towards a classmate! The Go/Soccer Club is about to describe its moves to the new members! Yuuko and Mai have repeated battles of strength with consistent results! And a vice principal grows a new head of hair overnight!

Nothing is unusual in the world of Nichijou. And expect the unexpected from Vertical this March!

Read More…the Ideal Resolution for 2017

New Releases

A new year has begun and with a new calender comes a new list of titles ready and awaiting Vertical readers. We kick-off 2017 with some of the biggest names from Japan’s media industry. And we promise that these are only the first of a number of Grade-A works we have in store for our supporters.

There are few comic artists as well-known or as beloved as Junji Ito. An international icon, Ito works have defined J-Horror for many readers across the globe. Mr Ito makes his Vertical debut this month with his latest translated collection – Dissolving Classroom.

Yuuma Azawa is a new transfer student with a peculiar behavior – he constantly apologizes. To some that seems humbling or curious, but as his classmates will soon find out there is something more nefarious behind his deeds. With this new collection Ito digs into the concepts of vanity, pride and vengeance as Ito has minds and bodies melt with confusion and guilt!

Positive thinking makes the world go around in Nichijou 6. Keiichi Arawi’s hit comedy returns with what might possibly be the most zany volume in this series yet. Anything that can happen, will happen in this volume. So expect the laughs to flow from page one.

Foreigners invade their town and suddenly even those who “knew” foreign languages in previous volumes are overwhelmed by these native speakers from abroad. Then Ms. Nakamura decides to invade Nano’s home. But once she infiltrates enemy turf, she is then assaulted by horrors she never imagined existed!

In Ninja Slayer 7, Ninja Slayer is in deep deep trouble! Nina Slayer has already dived into the cyber world. He recently spent time in the Kyoto Badlands. Now his biggest threat yet will be coming to him! And not only that! This impressively powerful ninja will be chasing him to the grounds of his ninja master!

Fighting a battle of this magnitude on home turf would normally be an advantage, especially when your allies outnumber your enemy. In this case, the range of skills possessed by those engaged will level the battlefield. Ninja Slayer and his master may not be much of a match against this mysterious foe individually. Together, however, they might just be able to muster enough resolve to overcome this…but not without heavy loses.

Meanwhile in Immortal Hounds 3, local officials have uncovered some of the secrets behind the dangerous Resurrection Deficiency Syndrome (RDS)! And with this shocking information in hand, they begin to make moves to try to capture more Vectors.

Fuurin, as a mole working within this department, takes to the defensive and alerts those on her side of the new moves. Unfortunately those she has been tasked to protect are not interested in finishing their tasks just yet. They wish to continue to proceed, even after their missions were complete, as the process has become as sort of entertainment in what has become a monotonous world. How will this attitude be taken by Mama and her Vectors? And how will Fuurin deal with all this added work on her already packed schedule?

In Decapitation -Kubikiri Cycle-, a dropout from an elite Houston-based program fro teens is on a visit to a private island. Its mistress, virtually marooned there, surrounds herself with geniuses, especially of the young and female kind, one of whom ends up headless one morning.

The top-selling novelist year by year in his native Japan, NISIOISIN made his debut when he was only twenty with this Mephisto Award winner, a whodunit and locked-room mystery at once which is equally old school and eye-opening.

Koji Suzuki’s Ring Trilogy returns just in time for the Hollywood premiere of RINGS. To honor this occasion Vertical has worked with Mr Suzuki and Paramount on a movie-tie in rerelease of the original Ring featuring artwork from the new film. The new paperback should be hitting stores now and it should be a great introduction to this thrilling franchise. Horror fans and Japanese prose fans alike will marvel at the many twists and shocks Suzuki’s book provides.

Dig in to Vertical This Month

New Releases

It’s fall, and for many of us it is time to fill up with good reads. Whether digging into heaping piles of prose or hot servings of manga, these days readers can feast on great content and never feel ashamed to pack on the pounds of knowledge and entertainment.

To help with your literary spread Vertical is serving up some tasty reads full of humor, action, and suspense. And we’ve got more than enough to available for seconds or thirds…

Fumi Yoshinaga’s What Did You Eat Yesterday? is all about the eats and with this latest volume (11) Shiro is invited by his old friend Kayako to attend a family gathering and picnic.

It has been a while since Shiro has seen Kayako and her family, and this is an opportunity to reunite over a big bento meal. But Shiro already made plans for a picnic dinner for that evening also! Will he be able to pull of this double-duty with his wallet and stomach, or will he have to play favorites.

Reunions are in store also in To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts 3. In this fantasy tale by author-writer duo MAYBE, young main character Schaal returns home to pay respects to her fallen father. Her father was also an Incarnate, so she struggles with her memories of her family with the fear felt by her town upon hosting an Incarnate.

It has been a year and Schaal has returned to her home. The village is depressed as it is being haunted possibly by an Incarnate. And where there is a beast there will eventually be Beast Hunters. But this time Hank is not amongst them. And this time, it might be Schaal who will ultimately pull the trigger, even if it’s before a familiar face.

In Nichijou 5 the girls are proceeding with an interesting project; one that the readers of this series might be familiar with. Yukko, Mio, and Mai are working on a manga they plan to submit to a contest. Mio is basically expanding on a comic she has been doodling for a while now.

You would think that these three friends would come together to create something with a shared vision. That they would want to work with each other to make this project a success. But no. They’ll conspire to destroy the project. One of them might have done that accidentally and the other may have had more sinister intentions, yet the results are still the same… Mio will have to harden herself and work on the comic by herself while overcoming the challenges her own assistants have placed before her.

Meanwhile in Tokyo ESP 7 chaos reins supreme in this penultimate omnibus. Rinka’s mission in Hong Kong is complete. Now there is a bigger threat setting its eye on Tokyo with ambitions to take over the world! A new world order is afoot and the keys to this movement are a pair of espers the series has followed for some time now.

When Rinka and Ren thought they were going to have a happy reunion, suddenly new forces appear threatening the country and their allies directly. An international group with tentacles deep within the economic and political institutes of the world’s most powerful countries has set their eyes on espers and their abilities. Rinka, with her partners in Tokyo Metropolitan Police and the American CIA, will soon make plans to take down this new enemy…from within.

New Releases

Attack on Titan has been one of the biggest franchises to come out of Japan in years. And this month it returns to the West with a new light novel: Attack on Titan: End of the World.

Ever since the horde of seemingly immortal and mindless giants emerged a century ago, humanity has been eking out a secluded existence behind a series of concentric walls. The precarious peace does not last, and childhood friends Eren, Armin, and Mikasa, who witness the end of the world as they know it, embark on an infernal journey with no paradise in sight.

In this novelization of both parts of the mega-hit comic’s theatrical adaptation, the series’ familiar setting, plot, and themes are reconfigured into a compact whole that is fully accessible to the uninitiated and strangely clarifying for fans of the original.

After a short break, Takaya Kagami’s Seraph of the End 3 hits shelves with a gloomy holiday theme at its core. In this case, Christmas is finally here; an apocalyptic time of year for all good boys and girls.

Not only Guren but his closest allies among the Imperial Demons have accepted forbidden power, and the merciless Hiragi Clan orders them to go after its once-favorite but treacherous daughter Mahiru. The vampires, however, are ready to show that no human faction stands a chance against them.

So this month feast on these great works, but make sure to leave some room for seconds, because our December list will be just as filling.

Let’s Talk about J-Mysteries

Since Vertical’s inception in 2003 the publishing house has been at the forefront of translated Japanese mysteries. The genre has been at the core of the Japanese literary scene for decades and it has inspired numerous forms of media including movies, games, and manga throughout the years.

Supporting these works and their authors in Japan is the Mystery Writers of Japan.
Here is what they say about their position within that community:

The Mystery Writers of Japan (MWJ) brings together authors, critics, translators, illustrators, and other creators working in the mystery genre, and is the oldest organization in the field in Japan. It was born in Tokyo in 1947, as Japan was rebuilding from the destruction of World War II. The man who made it possible was Edogawa Rampo, one of the pioneers in the Japanese mystery literature genre, who became the first head of the MWJ.

Since its establishment, the MWJ has worked to promote mysteries in Japan, nurturing appreciation for works in the field. Its efforts over the years have been successful, and today mysteries are enormously popular in Japan.

With Japanese prose slowly gaining more acceptance in the West, Vertical and the MWJ feel it is important for readers to take a look at other genres to get a better appreciation for the culture and nuances of Japan. While there is a lot to learn from light novels and more youthful narratives, reading works such as Pro Bono, Shinjuku Shark, and The Cage may open up doors to a contemporary Japan that is more in tune with what is read by the masses there and a world outside of the subcultures of anime and manga.

To follow the Mystery Writers of Japan and the many Japanese novels that are translated into English please follow the MWJ at their website:

Summer Blockbusters

Summer is full of big big franchises! Full of action, excitement and tension these works tend to be memorable and often big budgeted.

Vertical may not have the biggest budgets to blow, but it does have some big names. And this month we have some big hitters along with a new action title debuting; a little bit of everything for everyone.

New Releases

Debuting this month, Ryo Yasohachi’s Immortal Hounds combines high intensity bullet ballet action with a high concept science-fiction narrative that digs deep into Japan’s dwindling population problems.

In a world where everyone is immortal some people have contracted a disease called Resurrection Deficiency Syndrome that prevents them from coming back to life after experiencing physical trauma or life-threatening illness. A police task force has been assigned to uncover the origins of this disease, as well as find a rogue group of vigilantes protecting those with RDS.

In Devils’ Line 2, Anzai is wounded badly and he begins to doubt whether he has the mental strength to continue with his duties. The taste of blood changed something within this half-devil and now he fears that he might not see Tsukasa ever again! But as he struggles with his psychological darkness another devil makes an appearance with some well timed optimism.

Not-so-ordinary hijinks continue in Nichijou 3. Yukko forgets her homework, again, and just when she thinks she has escaped without punishment Mr. Takasaki decides to unless a barrage unseen before in manga history. Later, Mio and Sasahara share a moment by a vending machine. Their struggle, so real and painful, brings them closer together as they stand together under overcast skies…

Konami Kanata’s Chi’s Sweet Home will soon wrap up. In this third collection Chi and her new furry friend, Cocchi, share a number of adventures in Green Park. And after we are treated to a FukuFuku bonus chapter, readers can check out a brand new Chi comic made for the announcement of the Chi’s Sweet Home anime, scheduled for broadcast Fall 2016!

So as you can see, this month we have some heavy hitters! Cat comics, not so sparkly vampires, very mortal immortals, and anemic educators… This is a line-up that deserves to be an almost every all-star team!

March Manga Madness!

Spring is in the Air

Well, almost.

There are still a few days left of winter, but spring is right around the corner. And to kick off this new season, Vertical has a pair of new series to brighten readers’ days.

So in between spring picnics under plum blossom trees or college basketball and preseason Major League Baseball games readers can partake in four new releases full of energy, passion, and hilarity.

New Releases

In Riichi Ueshiba’s Mysterious Girlfriend X, spring is for lovers. But in this case love is almost like a welcome disease!

A new girl has joined Akira’s class and there is an air of mystery around this stranger. She constantly falls asleep in class. Doesn’t interact with her peers. And her random outbursts are bizarre to say the least. But there is something about Mikoto that has piqued Akira’s interest.

So after he is caught in a moment of curiosity, he realizes that he basically cannot live without Mikoto. Lovesick to the point of becoming physically ill, Akira comes to depend Mikoto. And the strange thing is that a little voice told Mikoto she was going to fall for Akira. Spring is in the air all right, and it’s going to lead to some warm and potentially viscous moments.

Expect the unexpected in Keiichi Arawi’s nichijou. On the surface this appears to be a slice of life comedy set in a Japanese school. But upon second, or third look, there is always something unique going down within the pages of this beloved series.

Whether it’s the random use of Malay in the dialogue or the occasional deer wrestling scene, moments of surrealism tend to saturate this manga. Something that will be normal, though, will be moments of laughter. Expect to laugh a lot!

Gamon Sakurai’s AJIN returns this month with the most recent volume to reveal some secrets of Mr. Hat’s past. After a series of attacks on politicos and people in positions of power, the Japanese government is starting to crack. But amongst those who have fought against Mr. Hat there is a deep-rooted feeling that Sato will never stop until he gets exactly what he wants! Because, as readers will soon find out, Mr. Hat is fighting his own personal war. A war he has been engaged in for decades now!

In My Neighbor Seki 7, Seki does not want winter to end! Typical Seki, always looking to cause trouble, he has devised a pyramid scheme to completely monopolize on the winter holiday season. First he works on his XMas cosplay. Then he launches a series of overpriced and over-hyped products kids and adults “must have”! Then he plants gifts for kids to go searching…stuffed with useless trinkets. Rumi is not going to have any of that though. She’ll be tearing down his plans, cause she knows Seki has been bad all year!

Love! Comedy! Vengeance! Salmon showers… Yup. We’ve got everything you could ever ask for this month. Enjoy the Madness!

c8c23fd2122d7446d370847e_1180x5402016 Convention Schedule
