Developed by manga godfather Osamu Tezuka, Vertical’s MW hardcover was a revolution in localized manga design and narrative blowing away almost anything before it on its way to an Eisner nomination and multiple printings.

Now a new version of their MW is set to take on a more discerning and more sophisticated readership. Increasingly portable and more affordable than ever before this manga weapon is poised to fall in the hands of even more defiant readers desperate for change in what they consider to be a distorted comics culture.

Comic reporters and weekly publishers agree MW is manga at its darkest. The question here is…Will you succumb to it?

This year, the Oscars of comics is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and what better way to mark this momentous milestone than by recognizing the pioneer of manga, Osamu Tezuka, with a pair of nominations for two of his greatest works, MW and Apollo’s Song? The former is up for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Japan and the latter for Best Archival Collection/Project—Comic Books. The awards will be presented on Friday, July 25 at a star-studded event hosted by Bongo Comics co-founder, artist and writer Bill Morrison, who will be ably assisted by girl-band The Go-Go’s drummer Jane Wiedlin. Marketing Manager Stephen Vrattos will be in attendance with all the other creators and publishers, whose works have been deemed worthy of this time-honored event.

This is said with the utmost humility; a mere reiteration of what is oft said to us from fans and pros alike on a daily basis. Still, we would be remiss not to acknowledge all the wonderful people out there who take the time to enjoy our titles and include them on their year-end “Best of” compilations. So as our way of saying, “Thanks,” we present a list of “Best of 2007” lists on which Vertical’s books appear. Those listings on websites link to those sites and we urge everyone to check out these high-quality sites.

The long wait for the Osamu Tezuka’ classic will soon be over as MW hits the stands on October 30, 2007. Steering clear of the cute designs and slapstick humor that Tezuka defined in such known works as Astro Boy and Kimba, MW is the manga pioneer’s further exploration at redefining and expanding the boundaries of the graphic storytelling medium. Originally serialized in Big Comic in 1976, MW presents the disturbing tale of a man’s loss of conscience and the dichotomous adult life he leads as both society’s darling and its worst nightmare. This decidedly “anti-Tezuka” achievement nevertheless pulsates with his unique genius. And we’ve provided an advance preview of the first chapter to stave off Tezuka withdrawal while you eagerly await release of this masterpiece!
