The Shark is Back!

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Back on the streets and in the stores, Arimasa Osawa’s acclaimed Shinjuku Shark sequel goes on sale today. The second installment, The Poison Ape, takes us even deeper into the dark, seedy underworld of Shinjuku. The yakuza is protecting a wanted man—a Taiwanese mafia leader who pissed off the wrong hired gunman. Now the elite killer has entered Japan and is hitting the streets of Shinjuku, picking off anyone who gets in the way of his target. Detective Samejima needs to find the hitman and stop him before he turns the streets of Shinjuku into a bloodbath of revenge.

Check out what everyone is saying about the Shark.

Shark Attack!

The wait is over… One of Vertical’s most highly anticipated novels is ON SALE NOW! When Arimasa Osawa’s Shinjuku Shark made its debut in the early 90s it was an instant sensation, earning both the Eiji Yoshikawa New Writer Award and the esteemed Japan Mystery Writers Association Award. Combining the irreverent, anti-authoritarian attitude of Dirty Harry and the reckless bravado of the Die Hard movies’ John McLane, Detective Samejima, “The Shark”, was loved by men and women alike. Adaptations to film, television, even manga, quickly followed, and the series continues—gaining momentum as it enters the twenty-first century—with its ninth book winning the Japan Adventure Fiction Association Award in 2006. And Vertical is providing a hearty chunk of Shinjuku Shark to sate the bloodlust of our fans until they can get their very own copy. Read the entire first chapter right here, right now!

BEA returns to NYC and Vertical is there

Things really heated up at Book Expo America this year. And even when the Javits Center’s air-conditioning finally started working, it remained hot at the Vertical booth. Thousands of librarians and sellers attended the annual four-day event, many stopping by to discuss Vertical’s impressive line of books, including the popular Aranzi Aronzo series. Some picked up a free preliminary printing of renowned film auteur and Quentin Tarentino god Takeshi Kitano’s short story collection Boy. Other lucky visitors scored a copy of Shinjuku Shark, a new crime novel by leading Japanese hardboiled detective novelist Arimasa Osawa; while still others walked away, happily clutching a copy of an exclusive sampler of Vertical’s upcoming manga titles. Good thing the show comes around only once a year; it’ll take the Vertical crew that long to recuperate. Whew!
