Buddha nominated for two Eisner Awards and continues
to populate top ten lists!
Buddha by Osamu Tezuka continues to garner wonderful
reviews left and right, most recently in The Comics Journal,
where Buddha Vols. 1 & 2 were on the list for Best
of 2003. Gary Groth, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The
Comics Journal had this to say:
The English language publication of Osamu Tezuka’s Buddha
is a landmark publishing event in comics.
ForeWord magazine has also proclaimed Buddha’s
excellence and has nominated it for best graphic novel. Outpost,
a Canadian travel magazine, has listed Buddha on their
“Best Of” list, and The Washington Post will
be doing a round-up review of Buddha Vols. 1-4 shortly.
Also stay tuned to The Onion A.V. Club, which will feature
an interview with Vertical art director Chip Kidd, and full review
of Buddha Vols. 1-3.

Kaori Ekuni a huge hit at Toronto's Harbourfront International
Festival of Authors
Professor Ted Goossen of York University introduced Ms. Ekuni
to a large audience at the 24th annual International Festival
of Authors , and commented, “I’ve done this event
many times, but I’ve never seen this many people show up
to a Japanese interview!” Fans of Twinkle Twinkle
left moved by Ekuni's final words on love. "It is reckless
to love and trust somebody."
Ms. Ekuni shared the reading stage with Virginie Despentes, the
controversial French author of Baise-Moi, and “literary
brat-pack” member Tama Janowitz, author of Slaves of
New York. With The Japan Foundation of Toronto and The Harbourfront
Reading Series’ generous donations, Ms. Ekuni was able to
enjoy a very busy but worthwhile stay on Toronto's beautiful lakeside.

VERTICAL TO PUBLISH RING SEQUELS SPIRAL AND LOOP
The critics agree:
“Each event in Ring is slower and quieter than
its successor.”
--John Clute, Sci Fi Weekly
“A novel that reads much more like a short story, and moves
just as quickly.”
--James Michael White, SF Reader
Koji Suzuki’s brainy thriller, at any rate, is just the
beginning. Following on the success of Ring , Vertical
is proud to announce that it will be publishing the rest of the
highly acclaimed trilogy. Spiral is planned for early
2004.
“Readers will want to read the next book in this series
with a palpable addictive twinge. The good news is that translations
of both sequels are in the works, and the following two are likely
to make it here before any of the movies do. Readers can then
enjoy the additional pleasure of knowing how much better the book
is before they see the movie rather than after.”
-- Rick Kleffel, The Agony Column
