For thirteen years Mr. Sakai was a book editor at Nikkei, the Japanese Wall Street Journal. He also reported for the weekly Nikkei Business. He retains ties with a vast array of Japanese authors and their representatives. Mr. Sakai started Vertical in 2001.

ED CHAVEZ, Marketing Director

B.F.A., San Francisco State University (Japanese Language). For seven years Ed has been writing and critiquing Japanese popular culture for Publishers Weekly, Mania.com, and Otaku USA magazine. His familiarity with the Japanese comics industry led him to freelance work as an editor and translator for Tor-Seven Seas and DC/Wildstorm. Prior to joining Vertical, Ed developed publicity and promotional projects for DC Comics’ CMX and Kodansha, Ltd’s Kodansha BOX. When not trying to promote peace through manga culture, Ed has been known to edit indie comics and doujinshi.

Mr. Mentzas, A.B. Princeton University (Comparitive Literature); M.A. Columbia University (English), is an editorial director perfectly matched to Vertical’s goals, Having grown up in Kobe, Japan, Mr. Mentzas is himself an able, accomplished translator.

PETER MENDELSUND, Art Director

Peter Mendelsund is a multiple award-winning graphic designer, part-time classical pianist, and full-time gadfly. He has jacketed books for almost every major publisher in America and abroad, his design work appears in several permanent museum collections, has been featured in numerous magazines, and his editorial illustrations show up frequently in The New York Times and other publications. As well as art-directing the Vertical list, Peter is the senior designer at Alfred A. Knopf.
